| Jesus AND Mary? |
| DOES MARY COMPETE WITH JESUS? |
| Nothing could be further from the truth. Every son in love with his mother knows that his friends show their respect for him by the special ways they treat his mother. The same is true of Jesus and Mary. We honor Mary for the sake of her Son. The key to understanding the Catholic teaching about Mary is to realize that she is the New Eve, just as Jesus is the New Adam. One of the early Church fathers, St. Irenaeus, mentions this apostolic teaching. He is not the only one. St. Justin Martyr and Tertullian also mention it. St. Irenaeus was one of the disciples of one of the disciples of St. John, the beloved disciple of Jesus. He tells us that Jesus and Mary reversed the Fall of Adam and Eve. Just as Eve helped Adam in our condemnation, so Mary helps Jesus in our salvation. There was also a reversal in the order of creation. Eve came from Adam. Now, in reverse, the New Adam comes from the New Eve. If Adam and Eve had not sinned, at the end of their earthy journey they would have been taken body and soul to heaven to be with God in glory. Jesus and Mary did not sin. Both went to heaven, body and soul, at the end of their time on earth. |
